The name "Candelaria" is derived from the Spanish word "candela," meaning candle, and is often celebrated with candlelit processions and ceremonies.

The origin of this devotion is attributed to a vision or apparition of the Virgin Mary, who appeared to the Guanches, the indigenous people of the Canary Islands, in the 15th century. According to tradition, the statue of the Virgen de la Candelaria was found by two Guanche shepherds on the shores of Tenerife. The statue depicts Mary holding the Child Jesus, and it is venerated as a significant religious and cultural symbol.
