A Beginners Guide To Safe Astral Projection

Have you ever tried to astral project? Some new age gurus talk about it as if it is effortless, but true astral projection is anything but. It can take a lot of practice to be able to sufficiently control and separate your astral body before you can even begin projecting. Fortunately, there is an easy way you can try it out yourself.

What is astral projection?

Astral projection is a self-induced out-of-body experience. Some practitioners say that this process separates the soul from the body, which allows it to travel to any place or time. Others believe that it is a separate form of awareness, not the soul, which separates and travels.

How to astral project:

In its most basic form, astral projection requires a deeply relaxed, hypnotic state. It is very close to sleep, but not quite the same. If you have ever reached the point right between sleeping and waking, you have experienced this state. Avoid completely losing consciousness here -- the trick is to hold on to this "in between" state for as long as you can.

From there, move your awareness to a small part of your body. A single finger or toe is a good start. Visualize it until you can sense it perfectly, even though you cannot see it. Picture this part moving but do not actually move it. When you can feel the sensation of movement without experiencing actual, physical movement, move on to another part of the body. Continue this process until you have full control over your astral body. At this point, you can cause your astral body to stand up, separate itself from your physical body, and travel wherever you wish.

Your astral body will eventually return to your physical body, at which point you can begin to move and open your eyes again. Some people choose to return slowly and deliberately, while others prefer to begin moving the physical body in order to call the astral body home.

Astral projection is simple, but not easy

That might sound pretty basic -- you relax, mentally "move" your body, and astral project when you are ready. In reality, achieving and maintaining this state can be very challenging.

You will want to have a peaceful, quiet, private space. The presence of other people or animals can be distracting and break your meditative state. Lay down comfortably, but not so comfortably that you will fall asleep.

You may want to use tools to help you achieve a more deeply relaxed state. Crystals can be helpful here, like:

  • Amethyst, which assists with relaxation and meditation.
  • Clear quartz, which you can "program" to help you slip into a hypnotic state.
  • Lapis lazuli, to increase awareness.

Hold them, wear them as jewelry, or keep them near you while you attempt to astral project.

Using oils, incense, or candles for astral projection

Scent is a powerful tool for changing your thoughts, and it can be deeply relaxing and helpful for attaining hypnotic states. There are also certain herbs and fragrances that are especially useful for increasing perception, awareness, and relaxation. Using oils, incense, or candles can be helpful here, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

Candles

Avoid using candles while you are actually astral projecting. Candles can be a helpful focus for meditation and a great way to set a mood, but it is too dangerous to have an open flame burning while you have astral projected away. You should never leave a candle burning unattended -- that includes times when your body is present, and your awareness is elsewhere.

Before attempting astral projection, you may want to work with a candle to intensify your psychic talents. Astral projection is sometimes considered to be a form of clairvoyance, so lighting this candle, placing a glass of water beside it, reading the 78th Psalm, and focusing on your psychic abilities can help improve your ability to "see" while traveling as your astral body. After this work, you can try entering the hypnotic state and astral projecting.

Incense

You can use incense as long as it has finished burning before you begin entering the hypnotic state. Light it beforehand, let it scent the room, create the right atmosphere, and attract the proper energy. Once it is burned away, you may start meditating. Frankincense, myrrh, lavender, or sandalwood are all good choices here. Experiment with them and see which helps you the most.

Oils

You may also wish to use anointing oils. Place a drop on your finger, and gently massage it at your temples and pulse points before you relax into the hypnotic state. You can use a specially blended Meditation oil, an essential oil diluted into a carrier oil, or a blend. Consider working with:

Astral projection is very safe, but it is not something you should undertake lightly. For some people, the process of separating from and returning to the physical body can be scary. Just remember: You are always in control, and you have the power to end the projection and return any time you want to.
