The Many Depictions of the Virgin Mary
Discover the diverse titles and sacred images of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrating her enduring impact and reverence in Christian devotion.
Our Lady of Fatima refers to the title given to the Virgin Mary based on the apparitions that occurred in the town of Fatima, Portugal in 1917. The events of Fatima involve three young shepherd children: Lucia Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto.
According to the accounts, the Virgin Mary appeared to the children on the 13th day of the month from May to October in 1917. Mary urged them to pray the Rosary, to offer sacrifices for the conversion of sinners, and revealed three "secrets" to them. The secrets included a vision of hell, a prophecy of the end of World War I and the prevention of World War II if her requests were heeded, and a vision of the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981.
The apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima gained significant attention and devotion, and the messages and requests delivered by Mary at Fatima have had a profound impact on Catholic piety and spirituality. The shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal has become a major pilgrimage site, attracting millions of visitors each year.

O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of the most holy Rosary,
you were pleased to appear to the children of Fatima and reveal a glorious message.
We implore you, inspire in our hearts a fervent love for the recitation of the Rosary.
By meditating on the mysteries of the redemption that are recalled therein may we obtain the graces and virtues that we ask,
through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
